Snaking versus jetting

A cable machine — a snake — spins a cutter head through the blockage and opens a channel. It's fast, it's $150–$350, and for a wad of wipes or a single soft clog it's the right call. What it doesn't do is clean the pipe. Roots get trimmed, not removed; grease gets a hole bored through it and closes back up in a few months.

Hydro jetting runs water at 3,000–4,000 psi through a nozzle that pulls itself down the pipe and blasts backward. It scours roots off the joint they grew through, strips grease to the wall, and knocks scale off old cast iron. What we jet in San Jose

Roots. The redwoods and coast live oaks planted with the 1960s tracts have roots in the joints of nearly every clay lateral they can reach. A root-cutting nozzle takes them off at the pipe wall. When jetting is the wrong tool

Jetting a pipe that's already broken can push water into the soil around it or, on Orangeburg, finish off a pipe that was barely holding. If a cable comes back with mud on it, or the line has been backing up after every storm, we camera before we jet.
